Meet the Doctors

Dr. Todd C. Cooper

Dr. Todd Cooper is originally from Canada, although he lived in several different countries growing up. When he was five years old, his family moved to Southern Asia and lived in Pakistan for a few years. They moved to India for 10 years, and then Singapore for four years, where Dr. Cooper attended an American high school. In 1990, Dr. Cooper returned to the United States so he could attend college in California.

Dr. Cooper went into oral surgery because he wanted to be involved in corrective jaw surgery, facial reconstruction, and the treatment of patients with traumatic injuries. He was inspired by the idea that he could help those in dire situations completely restore their function, appearance, and confidence. Dr. Cooper aims his focus on treating patients effectively and efficiently with less emphasis on the latest and greatest and more emphasis on compassion and individualized care. He believes in treating each patient like they are family and recommending the treatment he would suggest for any member of his own family.

Dr. Tyson J. Teeples

Dr. Tyson Teeples has always been fascinated with the biological sciences and he excelled in his high school anatomy and physiology class. It wasn’t until college, however, after reading an article about cleft lip and palate surgery that Dr. Teeples looked seriously into dentistry and medicine as a career. This article—and his wife’s encouragement—spurred Dr. Teeples to observe a family friend at a local dental office. With this experience, Dr. Teeples knew that dental school was the obvious next step.

While studying for a dental board exam, Dr. Teeples was thumbing through an oral surgery textbook and was fascinated at the before and after pictures of facial trauma injuries. He felt something deep down and knew then that he would pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. From that point, he never looked back. Observing and participating in facial trauma surgery and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, corrective jaw surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, and cleft lip and palate surgery and Children’s Hospital Boston, Dr. Teeples developed a clear vision of what his career would hold. Rubbing shoulders with world-renowned surgeons and world-class physicians influenced Dr. Teeples deeply.

The pathway to becoming a full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgeon has instilled within Dr. Teeples a love of people and a passion for seeing and caring for patients of all ages. Dr. Teeples truly enjoys his job. “I didn’t just want to do the surgery; I wanted to be a surgeon. It’s what I am, not what I do. It’s the patient connection that makes the difference.”

Dr. Ryan M. Toponce

Growing up, Dr. Ryan Toponce was always interested in pursuing a career in medicine, but he had a hard time deciding between medical and dental school. After high school, Dr. Toponce chose to travel to Peru on a medical/dental mission; it was on this trip that he discovered he wanted to pursue a path in dentistry. A dentist took Dr. Toponce under his wing and taught him how to extract teeth and place aesthetic and dental fillings. Following his return from Peru, Dr. Toponce applied for and enrolled in dental school.

Dr. Toponce discovered he wanted to be an oral surgeon after his encounter with the director of the oral surgery clinic at dental school. Dr. Toponce had the chance to visit the office with the director and witness multiple procedures performed. After his experience at the clinic, Dr. Toponce found himself intrigued by the idea of being able to fix any oral and facial disorder ranging from a traumatic injury to facial birth defects to placing dental implants. He loved the idea that he could combine his love for dentistry with his interest in surgery, and he was further encouraged by the thought that he could administer procedures in a safe environment. Dr. Toponce’s main goal is to help patients—regardless of their background or previous experience with surgery or dentistry—feel comfortable during treatment and make it through the procedure painlessly. He strives to ensure patients feel happy with their results and realize that with the right oral surgeon, treatment can be easy.
